Dr. Irakli Shengelia is a Head of the Medical School at Kutaisi International University (KIU) and a certified diagnostic radiologist.

 

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tbilisi State Medical University, earning the qualification of Medical Doctor with specialization in Diagnostic Radiology. He continued his professional education in Medical Imaging at the Belarusian State Medical University and the State Academy of Postgraduate Medical Education. He completed advanced specialization courses in radiological diagnostics at the Research Institute named after F. Todua (Tbilisi).

 

Throughout his medical career, Dr. Shengelia led diagnostic radiology departments at leading clinics in Kutaisi. Under his leadership, structural development was achieved and patient-centered healthcare services were implemented.

 

Alongside his medical profession, he became actively involved in local governance. From 2017 to 2024, he served as a majoritarian member of the Kutaisi City Council for two consecutive terms, and he held the position of Chairman of the City Council from 2018 to 2024. During this time, he was a member of the Health and Social Affairs Commission and the author of several municipal budget programs aimed at improving the local healthcare system.

 

Dr. Shengelia is a member of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the Georgian Association of Radiologists.
