With the financial support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia and the organization of Kutaisi International University (KIU), Kutaisi is hosting the 8th European Physics Olympiad (EuPhO 2024) from July 15-19. The Olympiad was opened on July 15 in the ceremony hall of Akaki Tsereteli State University. The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia Tamar Makharashvili, the Deputy State representative of Imereti, Levan Kiknavelidze, Rector of Kutaisi International University (KIU) Dr. Alexander Tevzadze, President of EuPhO Dr. Jaan Kalda, Chairs of the EuPhO 2024 Organizing Committee Magda Magradze and Davit Nishnianidze, Gennadi Margvelashvili, coordinator of the organizing committee of EuPhO 2024, members of scientific and academic committees of the Olympiad, contestants, and invited guests.
This year's Olympiad brings together more than 400 representatives from 55 countries. Contestants and their leaders live in the university city of Kutaisi for a week, competing in the Physics Olympiad. Various educational events are also planned for the participants. The winners of the Olympiad will be announced on July 19 and awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals, along with honorary diplomas.
The European Olympiad in Physics (EuPhO) is one of the prestigious and successful tournaments in the educational and scientific field, it was founded in Estonia 8 years ago. Over the years, the Olympiad has revealed a number of talented and outstanding young people.
The Georgian team has participated in the Olympiad six times, with financial support from the Ministry. Georgian students have won a total of twenty-two medals, including two gold, eleven silver, and nine bronze. In 2022, at the fifth consecutive Olympiad, the Georgian national team achieved one of its best results, winning two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals among 37 participating countries.
EuPhO 2024 is organized by Kutaisi International University. The Olympiad is held with the financial support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia. The supporters of the project are the international charity fund "cartu", Akaki Tsereteli State University and companies: "Citadel", "Wincent" and "Aversi".
