Kutaisi International University (KIU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences – one of the world’s leading research institutes in the mathematics, based in Canada. Under the agreement, KIU has been granted Affiliated University status. This partnership enables KIU to further strengthen its engagement with the international scientific and academic community, participate in joint research initiatives, and contribute to the advancement of mathematics and related scientific disciplines.
Kutaisi International University Executive Director/Rector, Mr. Vakhtang Tsagareli, thanked the Director of the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, Professor Dr. Deirdre Haskell, for the partnership and discussed prospects for future cooperation. The meeting was attended by KIU Chancellor, Dr. Levan Kopaliani; KIU Head of the School of Mathematics, Professor Dr. Ramaz Botchorishvili; and KIU Professor Dr. Alexander Meskhi, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia and Head of the Giorgi Nikoladze Research Centre, KIU.
Under the agreement, the parties will work to bring Georgian students and researchers closer to the international scientific community, collaborate on joint research projects, and organise international conferences, seminars, and educational events. The partnership will also enhance the University’s capacity to attract scholars, researchers, and students from abroad, thereby further strengthening scientific and research disciplines in Georgia.
Affiliated University status is of particular importance for the recently established Giorgi Nikoladze Scientific Research Centre. The partnership will enable the Centre to build connections with leading international scientists, participate in global research initiatives, and create supportive environment for the development of early-career Georgian researchers.
Notably, the first practical step in this collaboration is already under way: the Fields Institute, alongside its affiliated universities and the Giorgi Nikoladze Research Centre, have planned a regional summer school at KIU, scheduled to take place in September, titled “Mathematics for Artificial Intelligence”. The event’s organising committee includes Professor Dr. Deirdre Haskell and the Head of the Giorgi Nikoladze Research Centre, Professor Dr. Alexander Meskhi.
Kutaisi International University continues to expand its international network of partnerships and to deepen its cooperation with leading educational and research institutions worldwide, in line with its mission to promote the development of internationally recognised standards in education, science, research, and innovation in Georgia.
