Kutaisi International University (KIU) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) Strengthen Strategic Partnership

 30/04/2026

A delegation from Kutaisi International University (KIU) has concluded an official visit to Munich, hosted by Technical University of Munich (TUM) — one of Europe's leading technology centres and a longstanding strategic partner of KIU.

The delegation comprised Acting Rector of Kutaisi International University (KIU) and Director of Kutaisi University Campus, Mr. Vakhtang Tsagareli, Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of the International Charity Foundation Cartu, Mr. Nikoloz Chkhetiani, Kutaisi International University Chancellor, Dr. Levan Kopaliani, and Head of the International Relations Office, Mrs. Mariam Naneishvili.

During the visit, KIU's leadership met with the President of Technical University of Munich, Professor Dr. Thomas Hofmann.

The parties discussed opportunities to deepen the existing partnership and agreed on prospects for moving towards a broader, more ambitious model of strategic cooperation. President Thomas Hofmann expressed TUM's clear commitment to actively support KIU's continued development — including joint participation in research, integration into international academic projects, and the expansion of student and staff exchange programmes.

Under the new agreement, a new cohort of German professors will join KIU's academic community. This will significantly strengthen the academic process, enabling students to gain knowledge of European standards, and to align Georgia's educational system more closely with Europe's leading scientific practice. The agreement will further support the implementation of innovative teaching methods and the development of joint research projects — ultimately raising the competitiveness of KIU graduates in both local and global labour markets. Ambassador of Georgia to the Federal Republic of Germany, Professor Dr. Alexandre Kartozia, participated in the official meetings held in Munich.

As part of the visit, members of the Georgian delegation toured the university campus in Garching — a world-class research hub in the fields of natural sciences and engineering. Representatives of KIU and the Cartu Fund visited the Centre for Computer Science operated by the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and its state-of-the-art research laboratories, gaining first-hand insight into innovative management and teaching methodologies. The meetings highlighted specific priority areas that will support KIU's active engagement in global academic networks and high-technology projects.

An important agreement was also reached during the visit between KIU and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU). Two universities agreed to plan joint educational and research initiatives in the field of law — offering students and academic staff of KIU's School of Law valuable new opportunities to participate in international research projects and exchange programmes.

Throughout the visit, the KIU delegation held high-level meetings with the heads of schools and programmes at TUM. A separate meeting was held with the Bavarian State Minister for European and International Affairs, where prospects for cooperation in education and science were discussed.
