Kutaisi International University (KIU) has opened UniverCity, a new educational and innovation space, on Kutaisi's central boulevard. The opening ceremony took place as part of the Kutaisi City Day festivities and was developed in a close partnership between KIU and Kutaisi City Hall.
The space was officially opened by Acting Rector of Kutaisi International University and Director of Kutaisi University Campus, Mr. Vakhtang Tsagareli, and Mayor of Kutaisi, Mr. David Eremeishvili.
The ceremony was attended by First Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Dr. Giorgi Volski, Chairperson of the Education, Science and Youth affairs Parliamentary Committee, Ms. Mariam Lashkhi, Parliamentary Delegate for Kutaisi, Dr. Zaza Lominadze, and representatives of the executive and local government.
The KIU Capella performed at the opening ceremony. The event also featured presentations of innovative student projects and educational programmes, as well as an exhibition of work by students of the Design programme at KIU. Acting Rector, Mr. Vakhtang Tsagareli and Chancellor, Dr. Levan Kopaliani announced the results of the student video competition - KIU IN YOUR LENS - and presented awards to the winners.
The concept behind UniverCity is to promote Kutaisi as a leading university city – an ambition which is fully aligned with the educational reform initiated by the Government of Georgia.
UniverCity is located in the central square of Kutaisi. Educational institutions will have the opportunity to plan and implement their own projects, invite guests, and hold public discussions with the participation of schoolchildren and university students.
The innovative hub will highlight KIU’s European-standard academic and research programmes, as well as latest developments from its outstanding university campus, unique in the region. The new space reflects cultural and historical heritage of the city and contributes to strengthening its creative identity.
