Leading Computer Scientist Kurt Mehlhorn Delivers Public Lecture at KIU

 06/05/2025

Kutaisi International University (KIU) hosted a public lecture by leading German theoretical computer scientist Professor Kurt Mehlhorn, titled “Who Gets What? Fair Division of Indivisible Goods”.

Professor Mehlhorn has been a vice president of the Max Planck Society and is director of the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science. Professor Mehlhorn has been an important figure in the development of algorithm engineering and is one of the developers of LEDA, the Library of Efficient Data types and Algorithms.

The event was opened by KIU Acting Rector, Professor Paata Turava, who underscored the role of international cooperation in advancing the university's research and academic excellence.

The public lecture was attended by students from various schools in Kutaisi, as well as Georgian and foreign professors and teachers from the KIU School of Computer Science.

In his talk, Professor Mehlhorn addressed the challenges of fairly allocating indivisible goods - such as houses or cars - among multiple individuals, a problem with deep roots in both computer science and economics. He focused on the principle of envy-freeness up to any good (EFX), a relaxed fairness condition relevant when true envy-freeness is unattainable.

This event is part of KIU’s broader commitment to connecting students with global scientific leaders and offering exposure to current research topics at the frontiers of computer science.
