From September 15 to October 7, 2020, Kutaisi is hosting the KIU MURAL FEST international festival for the first time. The festival is initiated by Kutaisi International University and "Tbilisi Mural Fest", the implementing organization. It is already the second week, a group of world-famous artists has been visiting Georgia to paint buildings on the campus of Kutaisi International University.
Artists from Germany, Serbia, Greece, who over the years have painted various cities around the world and a number of famous walls, are among the invited artists. As part of the festival, four unique works have already been created by international street art stars, including by renowned artists such as INO from Greece (https://www.widewalls.ch/artists/ino), ARTEZ from Serbia (https://www.widewalls.ch/artists/artez), German group INNERFIELDS (http://innerfields.net/). German artist renowned in this field - CASE MACLAIM (https://www.widewalls.ch/artists/case-maclaim) will visit Georgia on October 1 and will work with a group of artists until October 7 to create a mural on the wall of one of the buildings of Kutaisi International University. Those who wish to view the final works of KIU MURAL FEST will be able to view them on campus from the beginning of studies.
KIU MURAL FEST is held in Kutaisi for the first time. The aim of the festival is to promote Kutaisi. The murals painted by famous street artists will appear on the world map of Street Art and will make the already unique campus and environment of the city and Kutaisi International University more interesting and diverse. Street art is one of the modern currents of visual art, associated with freedom, youth and new technologies. In addition, the festival also aims to promote street art in Georgia.
Different and innovative works of art will create a unique environment for study and recreation for students living on the Kutaisi International University campus - a space where technology and contemporary art meet.
About the organizers:
The Kutaisi International University (KIU) campus is located in the environmentally clean area in Kutaisi; it is spread out on 153 hectares of land and includes an ultra-modern academic building, library, cafeteria, well-equipped sports and road infrastructure, shared workspaces, student dormitories, as well as accommodation for academic and administrative staff. The gradual development and construction of the university campus is underway, under funding of International Charity Foundation “Cartu”.
This year, Kutaisi International University (KIU) admitted the first batch of students. According to the average score of the Unified National Examinations, KIU is the number one public (state) university in Georgia today.
Tbilisi Mural Fest was established last year with the support of Tbilisi and Berlin City Halls. The organizer and author of the idea of festival is Besik Maziashvili, a Georgian sculptor working in Europe, who has been living in Berlin since 2012; in addition, he is the author of the idea of various festivals. His works are exhibited in many galleries around the world. Maziashvili's works are kept in the permanent collection of the Museum of European Cultures in Berlin.
